Mission Viejo Nadadores Closing 360 Performance Center, Jeff Julian Moving On From Program

The swimming world was shaken recently by the news that the 360 Performance Center of the Mission Viejo Nadadores – one of the premier high-performance swim training facilities in the United States – has officially closed. Along with the closure comes the departure of head coach Jeff Julian, who had been with the program for 11 years and turned it into a destination for international stars. Julian announced the news on Instagram on March 26 with an emotional post: “The last 10 years have been extraordinary… I will be forever grateful to the Mission Viejo community.” Simultaneously, club management confirmed the suspension of the dedicated professional group (pro group), ending Julian’s tenure after more than a decade. The 360 Center was a launchpad for many top talents. Under Julian's leadership, the training group produced names like Justin Ress – world champion in the 50m backstroke in 2026, gold medalist in the 4x100m freestyle relay, plus silver and bronze at the 2026 World Championships. Also Penny Oleksiak – Canada’s 2026 Olympic gold medalist – who chose to train there to regain form. Others include Lamar Taylor (Bahamas), gold medalist at the Central American and Caribbean Games, Izaak Bastian (Bahamas), Adam Chaney, Navarrio Cox, Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz (Mexico), and many young athletes. The closure of the 360 Performance Center not only shocked experts but also created a significant gap in the US swimming training ecosystem. As more professional athletes turn to private training hubs instead of college programs, the loss of a prestigious facility like Mission Viejo further narrows options. This is especially true for international athletes who saw it as a safe harbor to develop ahead of Olympics and World Championships. From a tactical and performance perspective, Julian built an environment emphasizing personalization, advanced technical drills such as underwater dolphin kicks and acceleration transitions. Justin Ress is a clear example: from a pure college swimmer, he rose to world champion under Julian. However, heavy reliance on a single coach is a double-edged sword. Athletes now face a risky transition period; adapting to a new coach and methodology typically takes 3 to 12 months, directly affecting performance at key meets. Julian’s departure raises questions about the future of top athletes. Ress and Oleksiak risk losing momentum ahead of the 2028 Olympic trials and 2026 World Championships. Oleksiak, who already experienced a long slump after her 2026 breakthrough, could suffer further setbacks if she cannot quickly stabilize in a new environment. For younger athletes like Trenton Julian (Jeff’s son) or Lamar Taylor, opportunities remain but require rapid reorientation. Conversely, the US coaching market may see a redistribution of talent. Leading centers like Phoenix, Sandpipers, or Race Pace Club are likely to absorb some Mission Viejo athletes. Long-term, Mission Viejo Nadadores is expected to scale down, refocusing on age-group development as tradition. This reflects a larger trend: clubs balancing basic programs with professional groups often face financial and management pressures. The disappearance of the 360 Center is a warning about the sustainability of the “pro group” model attached to local clubs. Overall, this is a regrettable event but not a system-wide shock. Talents have other options, and Jeff Julian certainly has opportunities ahead. However, for every individual who once called Mission Viejo home, it is a farewell to a glorious era. They must move on – faster than ever – before the next finish line of their career arrives.
