Numbers Don't Lie, Writers Do: The N/A Matrix in Vietnamese Football Analysis

The writing was polished: “Not enough information to make a judgment.” When the arena lights go out, numbers start to speak, but if no numbers were collected at the very beginning, the floodlights only illuminate an empty training ground. This is not a rare story in sports media, especially in Vietnam. Long Facebook posts advertised as “expert tactical analysis” often contain no player, no coach, no concrete match, no data. They may be well-written, but they are not well-researched. The N/A matrix is not the villain. It is a warning. A journalist should not publish a long article from a single text message. In my work in Munich, I archive raw files for years because every denial needs a factual counterweight. Every objection is an equation missing a variable, and without variables, the equation has no solution. Some will argue that a data-free article can still inspire. But that is like claiming a team without a striker can win through defense alone. Sports media should allow conclusions to be absent, but facts cannot be absent. Readers deserve a clear distinction between analysis and fabrication. The real lesson from the empty framework is the courage to admit missing information. If Vietnamese sports outlets printed “based on published raw data” or “no specific player confirmed,” fans would gain a tool to separate news from rumor. Numbers do not need a visa, but they need a paper trail. When the trail is there, World Cup or V.League becomes a fairer game where emotion cannot marry logic. What I want next season, more than any blockbuster transfer, is an editorial office patient with the bench. A substitute today can be a hidden queen tomorrow. In football, scorers are celebrated, but the people who prepare the pre-match meal are the ones changing the season. Professional sport, at its core, is a publishing business of truth. Writers are only instruments; numbers are the real author.
