A nine-section sports analysis full of “N/A”: The crack before the collapse of data journalism

“Don’t ask what position a player plays; ask what position he is disguising as.” I wrote that in the summer of 2026, when positional data showed Mohamed Salah was not a winger in the way people labeled him. This morning, I remembered that sentence after receiving a document marked “deep analysis.” The document had a full skeleton: Patch & Meta, Tournament System, Team & Player, Regional Landscape, Club Finance, Rules & Governance, Risk Profile, Public Narrative, Esports Industry Transmission. But at every stage, the answer was very short: “N/A — insufficient information.” No game title, no patch version, no player, no tournament. A crack always appears before the collapse; people just prefer to hear the collapse. In the Patch Impact Assessment, the document refused to discuss meta without a game version. That is honest. Many Vietnamese sports channels still invent narratives from a friendly match or a small victory. This N/A framework exposes their habit: build the column first, search for the foundation later. The Tournament System section also stayed empty. No event name, no format, no route to qualification. For me, real analysis starts after the final whistle, when the video room turns on the lights. But before that, you must know what match you are analyzing. Refusing to judge without basic data is rare in Vietnamese sports media. The Team & Player section had no roster, no coach, no substitutes. For fans, names are everything. For analysts, names are only the beginning. A defender may play like a playmaker; a striker may excel at creating space. To see that, you need positional data and video. If the framework contains no player name, the honest answer is “cannot assess.” The risk section warns that absent identified risks does not mean absent real risks. That is valuable. Many esports teams in Vietnam have tactics in their heads but no data system to measure them. Without measurement, they cannot see their own weaknesses. Every surprise on the pitch is a meeting we showed up late for. The document also refuses to build public narratives without evidence. In contrast, Vietnamese sports media often use big labels such as “decisive battle” without any statistical foundation. A true analyst must stand outside the emotional stream. I know many people will mock an analysis full of “N/A.” But in an environment flooded with groundless conclusions, knowing how to say “not enough evidence” is a survival skill. Of course, I could be wrong. If “N/A” is only an excuse for laziness, then this empty framework is just a beautiful trash can. The question is not whether the framework is empty, but why it is empty. In the next three years, paid sports analysis platforms will defeat emotion-driven news sites because readers are tired of promises without data. Articles that dare to publish a framework with many “N/A” boxes will not be mocked forever. When the crack becomes deep enough, people will return to the original story and ask: why did no one look at it directly back then?
