When a Golf Analysis Is Full of N/A: A Data-Verification Lesson for Sports Media
In journalism, a blank space is also information. A newly surfaced golf analysis produced by an automated system contains all the visual structures of a professional report, but every field is filled with N/A. It has sections for technical data, player form, tournament strength, governance, rules, risk, public narrative, and industry impact, yet it names no player, no event, no source, and no verified number. Drawing on my years of covering football and golf teams, this empty report is not a harmless glitch. It is a wake-up call for sports media that treat automation as a substitute for editorial verification. The true danger is not that the report is wrong; the danger is that it looks serious enough to deceive readers. A sports newsroom should treat N/A as a stop signal, not as raw material for publication. Before publishing, editors must ask whether the story contains a verifiable name, a concrete event, a sourced statistic, or an original insight. If the answer is no, the responsible act is not to publish. A well-formatted blank report is worth nothing without the discipline of human fact-checking. In the age of AI-generated content, the credibility of sports journalism depends on the courage to say no to empty analysis and to wait until there is actually a story to tell.
